About

I’m from a small, off-grid island on the west coast of Canada. Growing up in an eclectic, interdependent community sparked my passion for genuine connection and my conviction that we rise by lifting up others.

Dr Toby Newstead

Before becoming a Senior Lecturer at The University of Tasmania, I worked at a boutique Tasmanian change agency that assisted businesses with strategy, leadership, culture, and wellbeing for nearly a decade.

While in the field, I learned that every leader is a person first. It’s when the leader as a person opens up and enhances their own self-awareness, builds their personal accountability, and finds their inherent motivation to improve and grow, that true leadership development occurs.

My current research is focused on good leadership; how we can recognize it and how we can develop it.

I take a virtues-based approach to this work, which is grounded in the philosophy of virtue ethics. My work has been published in some of the top-tier, peer-reviewed academic leadership and management journals.

A lot of the work that goes on in leadership consulting has tenuous (at best) links to peer-reviewed research.

And a lot of the work that goes on in research has barely discernable implications for practicing leaders.

I occupy the space between quality research and practical relevance, applying research-informed strategies to help good people become great leaders.

Courage. Wisdom. Compassion. Justice. Humility.

Virtues such as these exist in all people.
By focusing on virtues, we can unlock leadership potential.
